I grew up in the small towns of Pierce, Idaho, and Kamiah, Idaho, where my father and other men in the family were lumberjacks or worked in related jobs. I went to St. Martin’s High School, a boarding school in Olympia, Washington. I studied classical civilization at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and have lived in New Haven since the 1980.
My first job was haying for a local farmer. Later jobs I had included mill worker, cafeteria worker, aquarium store sales, and gardening. I also worked for a while as a computer programmer.
I have been interested in making art since before grade school. I drew and doodled a lot. I was fascinated by my kindergarten teacher’s explanation on “blue and yellow make green.” I also took some photos back around then and was told I took a good picture. I also was interested in modern architecture and drew hundreds of house plans while in study periods or during lessons I had already mastered. In high school I took a course in oil painting. I really enjoyed painting, even more than the drawing. The instructor and the other students encouraged me in pursuing art.
But I haven’t done much art since then. I missed making art but other matters always seemed to take precedence. Besides oil paints have a very noticeable odor and oil painting takes a fair amount of space. Now that I have time for art, I am picking up various art media. My allergies and lack of space rule out oils.
I am learning photography, watercolor and pastels (sometimes called “chalk”). Most of the photos were taken with the end of having reference photographs for future art work in watercolor or pastels not for impressing photo buffs. But I think some of them work well as art prints. The photography has become an end in itself, but I am getting back to practicing painting in addition to taking photos.
Most of the photos I’ve taken have been taken with a canon point and shoot camera:
- first Canon Powershot A80,
- then Canon Powershot A520,
- then Canon Powershot A720 IS.
I have recently bought a Canon 450D EOS Rebel XSi DSLR
- with Canon 18-55mm IS kit lens,
- Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens,
- and a Tamron AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 macro lens.
I expect to place some paintings up on the blog after a while. In the meantime I am learning Adobe Photoshop CS4 & Lightroom 2 for managing thousands of my photos, and I want to learn Corel Painter 11 to try my hand at digital art. I think I may also write reviews of books I like on painting and photography.
